The rivalry between the Fort Lauderdale Strikers and the New York Cosmos dates back thirty-seven years. Over that span, the Strikers had only won four games, all of them at home.
Going into this game, the Strikers had been a six game winless streak including drop the first two games of the fall NASL season by shutout. In the modern era, the Strikers had never scored at home versus the Cosmos.
Adding insult to injury, literally, the Lads from Lauderdale ran a new formation onto the pitch in an attempt to earn at least a point. The 4-4-2 turned out to be very affective for the Strikers on both offense and defense.
The two teams played to a 1-1 draw but there was plenty of action in this game that produced a point for the Strikers and the first ever draw in the history of this rivalry.
