What a way to finish a regular season.
The 2014 campaign for the Lads from Lauderdale has truly been a roller coaster ride. There have been thrilled and spills throughout the first twenty-six games. The twenty-seventh had the makings of an epic match up between the Strikers and the expansion Ottawa Fury. The Fury played their first ever game at Lockhart and visited once again to finish out the season.
Fort Lauderdale needed a win or a draw to advance to the NASL playoffs.
The Fury’s Nick Patterson started the scoring early at the 16 minute mark. The wind played a large role in the game as it was blowing very hard and made it very difficult to play the ball in the air from the east to the west. All the scoring took place into the beach (east) goal.
Aly Alberto Hassan was a late substitution and it was a brilliant one by skipper Gunter Kronsteiner. Using the wind as a fourth defender pulled Stefan Antonijevic and inserted Hassan who had a spectacular goal at the 86.
The draw earned the Strikers a birth in the final four against Minnesota United in the cold.
